Method still beats dial art: bare seed on thatch fails even at perfect lb/1,000—finish contact work first (rental checklist).

Practice strip—empty weekend before overseed Saturday

Do this on a driveway tarp or spare measured lawn strip before rental day burns daylight:

  1. Write the zone rate from your seeding-rates worksheet (example: 4 lb / 1,000 tall fescue overseed).
  2. Compute half-rate per pass: 2 lb / 1,000 for a two-pass grid (or 1 lb / 1,000 if you plan four quarter-rate directions).
  3. Mark a strip with known area—Penn State fertilizer examples often use structures like 50–100 ft lengths; any rectangle works if you know sq ft. A measuring wheel beats pacing guesses.
  4. Weigh seed (and carrier, if used) on a kitchen scale into the hopper. Walk at the same steady pace you will use on the lawn.
  5. Weigh what remains. Delivered pounds ÷ (strip sq ft ÷ 1,000) = lb / 1,000. Adjust the dial until you hit the half-rate target within about 10%.
  6. Write the setting on the bag and in your journal: species, half-rate, dial number, walking pace note, wind conditions.

Sweep up seed from pavement so it does not wash into drains—same courtesy as fertilizer calibration.

Two-pass grid without doubling the bag

On overseed day:

  1. Load only enough seed for Pass A (half the zone pounds, plus any sand/sawdust carrier mixed evenly).

Carrier math for tiny bluegrass rates

When the hopper wants more volume than 1–2 lb / 1,000 of raw seed:

  • Trust the bag’s “setting 5” chart without a weigh-in on your spreader.
  • Run two full-rate passes “for insurance”—that doubles the stand and invites spindly, disease-prone seedlings.
  • Reuse last month’s fertilizer dial for seed.
  • Broadcast unbulked bluegrass into a stiff wind with a rotary and call stripes “germination failure.”

  • Skip contact work because the spreader math looked perfect.
