By late July, cool-season homeowners who already [priced seed pounds](/articles/cool-season-overseed-seeding-rates-how-much-seed), [booked the aerator or slit seeder](/articles/cool-season-aerator-slit-seeder-rental-booking-checklist), and sketched [slit vs broadcast method](/articles/cool-season-slit-seed-vs-broadcast-overseed) still need one dry-run skill before Labor Day: **calibrate the spreader for seed, then apply half the zone rate in one direction and the other half perpendicular**. University of Minnesota, Maryland Extension, Purdue AY-13/AY-20, and Nebraska Lancaster all treat multi-direction half-rate passes as the uniformity tool—not dumping the whole bag in one heavy lap. This is a DIY worksheet for tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and fine fescue renovation zones. It is not a brand dial chart. Confirm rates with [county extension](https://www.extension.org/), the **seed tag**, and a weighed strip on **your** spreader at **your** walking speed.

Weigh a measured strip until half-rate delivery matches the math.
- **Do not stack two full rates.** The grid rule from fertilizer work applies to seed: two perpendicular passes at **full** bag rate = roughly **double** the intended stand—Missouri’s excess-seed warning still applies ([seeding rates](/articles/cool-season-overseed-seeding-rates-how-much-seed)).

## Drop vs broadcast vs slit—what you are calibrating

## Practice strip—empty weekend before overseed Saturday

Do this on a driveway tarp or spare measured lawn strip **before** rental day burns daylight:

1. Write the **zone rate** from your [seeding-rates worksheet](/articles/cool-season-overseed-seeding-rates-how-much-seed) (example: **4 lb / 1,000** tall fescue overseed).  
2. Compute **half-rate per pass**: **2 lb / 1,000** for a two-pass grid (or **1 lb / 1,000** if you plan four quarter-rate directions).  
3. Mark a strip with known area—Penn State fertilizer examples often use structures like **50–100 ft** lengths; any rectangle works if you know **sq ft**. A [measuring wheel](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=measuring+wheel+feet&tag=lawnjournal0c-20) beats pacing guesses.  
4. Weigh seed (and carrier, if used) on a [kitchen scale](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=kitchen+scale+grams+pounds&tag=lawnjournal0c-20) into the hopper. Walk at the **same steady pace** you will use on the lawn.  
5. Weigh what remains. Delivered pounds ÷ (strip sq ft ÷ 1,000) = **lb / 1,000**. Adjust the dial until you hit the **half-rate** target within about **10%**.  
6. Write the setting on the bag and in your journal: species, half-rate, dial number, walking pace note, wind conditions.

Sweep up seed from pavement so it does not wash into drains—same courtesy as fertilizer calibration.

## Two-pass grid without doubling the bag

On overseed day:

1. Load only enough seed for **Pass A** (half the zone pounds, plus any sand/sawdust carrier mixed evenly).  
2. Walk **north–south** (or along the long axis) with consistent speed; shut the gate at turns.  
3. Reload for **Pass B** and walk **east–west**.  
4. Optional Purdue-style thickening: split into **four quarter-rate** directions on large bare renovations when striping risk is high—still totaling the planned zone rate, not 4×.  
5. If you already calibrated fertilizer this spring, **re-test with seed**—lighter particles leave the hopper differently, and a fertilizer gate setting can dump far too much bluegrass.

## Carrier math for tiny bluegrass rates

When the hopper wants more volume than **1–2 lb / 1,000** of raw seed:

- Mix dry **play sand** or clean sawdust until the blend flows smoothly—Nebraska’s “suitable material” theme and UMN’s hand-patch **1:4** seed:carrier ratio are starting points, not laws.  
- Calibrate the **blend**, then convert back: if half the blend’s weight is sand, you need twice the blend pounds to deliver the seed half-rate.  
- Keep sand dry; damp carrier clumps and stripes.

## What not to do on calibration weekend

- Trust the bag’s “setting 5” chart without a weigh-in on **your** spreader.  
- Run two full-rate passes “for insurance”—that doubles the stand and invites spindly, disease-prone seedlings.  
- Reuse last month’s fertilizer dial for seed.  
- Broadcast unbulked bluegrass into a stiff wind with a rotary and call stripes “germination failure.”  
- Calibrate after the slit-seeder rental clock is already ticking—practice empty the weekend before.  
- Skip contact work because the spreader math looked perfect.

## What to journal this week

Log spreader model, seed lot and tag photo, half-rate target, dial setting that hit the strip, walking pace note, whether you used sand/sawdust and at what ratio, pass directions, wind, and a photo of the practice strip before cleanup.
