How much phosphate—Purdue-style targets

Work in pounds of P₂O₅ per 1,000 sq ft, not “bags per yard.”

  1. Read the middle number: a 16-22-8 fertilizer is 22% P₂O₅ by weight.
  2. lb product / 1,000 × (% P₂O₅ ÷ 100) = lb P₂O₅ / 1,000.

Example: Target 1.25 lb P₂O₅ / 1,000 with a 16-22-8 bag → 1.25 ÷ 0.22 ≈ 5.7 lb product / 1,000. Then check the first number: 5.7 × 0.16 ≈ 0.9 lb N / 1,000—inside Penn State’s starter N band, and already a meaningful share of a later fall pulse.

Phosphorus rules—shop the exception, not the endcap
