Curative chemistry—label first, hot spots preferred

Iowa State’s wait-and-see path uses fast-acting, short-lived curatives in August or September to cut numbers where damage appears. They are not as reliable as preventives at driving counts to near zero, but they can greatly reduce severe loss when timed on young larvae. After early October, Iowa State generally does not recommend curative treatments. Penn State’s home-lawn note lands the same calendar: trichlorfon works best in late August or early September while grubs are smallest.

Michigan State lists trichlorfon and carbaryl as the usual chemical curatives, with research ranges roughly 20–80% control in September applications and lower efficacy later as larvae enlarge—set expectations accordingly. Colorado State University and UMass themes also note trichlorfon can degrade quickly in high-pH soil or water—another reason the label’s water-in instructions and local soil notes matter.
