Brown patch: what it is (and isn’t)
Brown patch is a foliar disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani, especially common on tall fescue in hot, humid weather.
Conditions that favor it
- Kansas State: strong activity when nights stay warm (above about 68 °F) and leaves remain wet for more than about 8 consecutive hours; excess nitrogen amplifies severity.
- NC State: can develop when night temperatures exceed about 60 °F; most severe when overnight lows stay above about 70 °F and daytime highs above about 90 °F; needs roughly 10–12 hours of continuous leaf wetness to infect; worse with poor drainage, shade, still air, overwatering, and excess nitrogen.

- Roughly circular or irregular patches from inches to several feet
- Tan, brown, or yellow turf that often stays upright

Culture first

Insect damage that masquerades as drought
White grubs
