Early August is when warm-season endcaps shout two jobs at once: **finish the last nitrogen pulse**, then **start a winter weed preventer**. Kansas State’s warm-season lawn calendar is explicit for Kansas-class bermuda, zoysia, and buffalograss: apply a **winter weed preventer in August to early September** against weeds such as **little barley, henbit, or chickweed**, and activate it with **at least about ¼ inch** of water. Clemson, Texas A&M AgriLife, and UGA land the same biology later for many Southeast and southern Plains yards—**cool nights / cooling soils before germination**, not a Saturday spray because the calendar flipped to August. If you dump a barrier bag on wilted Heat Advisory turf—or on a strip you still plan to overseed with rye—you solve the wrong problem.

This page is an **early-August winter-weed PRE countdown triage** companion to the [warm-season nitrogen-stop countdown](/articles/warm-season-nitrogen-stop-early-august-countdown-triage.md), [bermuda fall PRE after stopping rye](/articles/bermuda-fall-preemergence-after-stopping-rye-overseed.md), [chickweed / henbit scouting](/articles/chickweed-henbit-fall-winter-annual-lawn-scout.md), [prodiamine vs dithiopyr](/articles/prodiamine-vs-dithiopyr-pre-emergent-comparison.md), and [preemergence by soil temperature](/articles/pre-emergent-timing-soil-temperature-not-calendar.md). It is not a ZIP-code prescription. Confirm actives, turf species, rates, and seeding wait intervals with your [county extension](https://www.extension.org/). Always follow the **current product label**.

## Key takeaways

- **K-State warm-season calendar:** winter weed preventer **August to early September** for little barley, henbit, and chickweed; water-in about **¼ inch** (or more if the label asks).
- **Clemson HGIC fall PRE cue:** night lows about **55–60 °F for four consecutive days**—on average **Sep 1–15** piedmont/mountains and **Sep 15–Oct 1** coastal/central SC; water-in about **½ inch**; many products need a **second application ~8–9 weeks** later.
- **Texas A&M AgriLife theme:** many districts push **early September** so you are not late—standard PRE fails once winter annuals are already up (simazine / pronamide-class products may offer early-post forgiveness **only where labeled**).
- **UGA calendar theme:** roughly **Sep 1–15** north Georgia and **Oct 1–15** south Georgia for annual bluegrass and selected winter annuals—use as a regional map, not a single national Saturday.
- **Sequence with nitrogen stop:** K-State—**never fertilize past mid-August** on warm-season turf; Clemson SC homeowner N-stop themes often land near **Aug 15** Upstate / **Sep 1** coast. Do not buy a high-N “weed-and-feed winterizer” that fights the stop date.

## Why this early-August week confuses warm-season yards

Cool-season neighbors are already shopping Labor Day seed and nitrogen. Warm-season yards are still finishing summer growth, watching grub and armyworm scouts, and deciding whether last year’s henbit flush gets a **barrier** this fall. The same retail aisle sells spring crabgrass preventer, cool-season winterizer, and “winter weed preventer” bags—often without saying which **night / soil cue** your county uses.

| Cue that tempts a bag this weekend | What extension is actually timing | DIY correction |
| --- | --- | --- |
| August started on the calendar | Regional cool-down before germination | Match K-State Aug–early Sep vs Clemson night lows vs AgriLife early Sep |
| Pale lawn after heat | Often heat/drought, not a weed emergency | Probe moisture; hold soft N ([N-stop triage](/articles/warm-season-nitrogen-stop-early-august-countdown-triage.md)) |
| Last spring’s purple/white flush | Seed bank still waiting for cool soils | Map thin spots now; PRE before germination |
| Still overseeding rye this fall | Conventional fall PRE blocks rye too | Zone the lot—see [bermuda after rye](/articles/bermuda-fall-preemergence-after-stopping-rye-overseed.md) |
| Weed-and-feed winterizer endcap | Often high-N cool-season math | Read analysis; prefer PRE-only when labeled |

## The early-August triage (8 steps)

1. **Confirm warm-season species by zone.** Bermuda, zoysia, St. Augustine, centipede, and buffalograss follow this winter-annual PRE path. Tall fescue / bluegrass pockets need the [chickweed / henbit cool-season scout](/articles/chickweed-henbit-fall-winter-annual-lawn-scout.md) and [aerate/overseed vs PRE sequencing](/articles/fall-aerate-overseed-vs-preemergence-broadleaf-sequencing.md)—many fall barriers conflict with seeding.
2. **Decide whether PRE is the goal this fall.** Dense summer turf is still the long-term filter (Clemson). Thin shade, open soil after summer stress, and last spring’s henbit / chickweed / Poa maps justify barrier chemistry; a perfect canopy with no history can wait and scout.
3. **Pick the regional clock—not a national blog date.**
   - **Kansas / similar Great Plains warm-season calendars:** stage product for **August to early September** (K-State).
   - **South Carolina / Clemson cues:** wait for **four consecutive nights near 55–60 °F**, then apply (often September).
   - **Texas AgriLife districts 4 & 8 theme:** aim **early September** so you are not late.
   - **Georgia UGA theme:** ~**Sep 1–15** north / ~**Oct 1–15** south for Poa and winter annuals.
4. **Start a night / soil log this week.** A [soil thermometer](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=soil+thermometer+lawn&tag=lawnjournal0c-20) at about 2 inches and a notepad for overnight lows beat guessing. One cool Friday after a 100 °F week is not a four-day Clemson cue.
5. **Lock the nitrogen stop before you shop fertility mixed with herbicide.** Finish or skip any last summer pulse only if turf is growing and your stop date still allows it—then **stop**. Pair with [winterizer myths](/articles/warm-season-winterizer-fertilizer-myths-bermuda-zoysia.md) and [fall potash vs N-stop sequencing](/articles/warm-season-fall-potash-vs-nitrogen-stop-early-august-sequencing.md).
6. **Refuse the rye conflict.** If a zone is getting temporary winter rye, conventional fall PRE that blocks winter annuals also blocks desirable rye. Split the spreader; do not one-bag the whole property.
7. **Read the active ingredient and turf list.** Common DIY fall PRE themes include **prodiamine**, **pendimethalin**, **dithiopyr**, **isoxaben** (broadleaf-leaning), and regionally labeled products such as **atrazine** or **simazine** on certain southern grasses—**only** where the label lists your species and weeds. Centipede and St. Augustine are not bermuda; wrong chemistry burns soft late-summer tissue.
8. **Plan water-in and a possible second pass.** K-State cites about **¼ inch** activation water; Clemson commonly cites about **½ inch** if rain is not coming. Many products need a **second application ~8–9 weeks** later for season-long control—put the reminder on your phone when you make the first pass.

Browse labeled starters after the triage—not before: [lawn pre emergent winter weeds](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lawn+pre+emergent+winter+weeds&tag=lawnjournal0c-20), [prodiamine pre emergent](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=prodiamine+pre+emergent+lawn&tag=lawnjournal0c-20), [pendimethalin crabgrass preventer](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=pendimethalin+crabgrass+preventer&tag=lawnjournal0c-20), [dithiopyr Dimension lawn](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=dithiopyr+dimension+lawn&tag=lawnjournal0c-20), [isoxaben Gallery herbicide](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=isoxaben+gallery+herbicide+lawn&tag=lawnjournal0c-20), and a calibrated [broadcast spreader](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=broadcast+lawn+fertilizer+spreader&tag=lawnjournal0c-20). Measure rainfall with a [lawn rain gauge](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lawn+rain+gauge&tag=lawnjournal0c-20) so “watered in” is inches, not hope.

## Regional clocks side by side

| Source theme | First-pass window | Activation / follow-up | Best DIY use |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Kansas State warm-season calendar | **August to early September** | ≥ ~**¼ in** water | Great Plains bermuda / zoysia / buffalo calendars that name little barley + henbit + chickweed |
| Clemson HGIC | Nights **55–60 °F × 4 days**; SC averages **Sep 1–15** piedmont / **Sep 15–Oct 1** coast–central | ~**½ in** water-in; often reapply ~**8–9 weeks** | Southeast yards waiting on cool nights, not early-August heat |
| Texas A&M AgriLife (Districts 4 & 8 theme) | **Early September** before germination | Thorough water-in; late apps fail once weeds are up | Southern Plains timing; do not wait for spring flower panic |
| UGA weed calendar theme | ~**Sep 1–15** north GA / ~**Oct 1–15** south GA | Label rates; sequential if needed | Annual bluegrass + winter annual map for Georgia latitudes |

These are planning aids. Your county sheet and the **label** still win.

## What the preventer can and cannot do

**Can help with (when timed before germination and labeled):**

- Winter annual broadleaves such as **henbit** and **chickweed** (K-State / Clemson life-cycle framing)
- Winter annual grasses such as **little barley** (K-State) and **annual bluegrass / Poa annua** (Clemson / UGA themes when the product lists them)
- Leftover **volunteer rye** seed pressure on bermuda yards quitting overseed (Clemson overseeding notes—see the [rye companion](/articles/bermuda-fall-preemergence-after-stopping-rye-overseed.md))

**Cannot replace:**

- Culture—mowing height, morning deep-infrequent water, and a stop on soft late nitrogen (Clemson BMP spine)
- Dig-and-count for [white grubs](/articles/white-grub-curative-dig-count-early-august-triage.md) or soap-flush for [fall armyworms](/articles/fall-armyworm-intensify-scouting-early-august-triage.md)
- A spring crabgrass-only calendar copy-pasted onto fall winter annuals without checking the weed list
- Postemergence cleanup of weeds that already germinated—switch to a labeled fall/winter broadleaf path while plants are still small (K-State late-October theme for chickweed/henbit on warm-season turf; Clemson mild-day winter post themes)

## Shopping and application spine (when your clock says go)

1. Measure the treatment area with the free [lawn area calculator](/tools/lawn-area.md); calibrate the spreader ([calibration guide](/articles/lawn-fertilizer-spreader-calibration-overlap.md)).
2. Choose a product labeled for **your grass** and the winter weeds you actually get—not the loudest “fall feed.”
3. Apply when turf is not wilted under Extreme Heat Warning leftovers; drought-stressed warm-season turf takes herbicide injury more easily (Clemson postemergence heat caution themes apply to stressed canopies generally—bias toward labeled PRE on recovering turf).
4. Water in to the label / extension inch target; catch cans beat timer minutes.
5. Schedule the sequential application if the label or Clemson-style 8–9 week theme calls for it.
6. Pet and people re-entry live on the **current label**—see [pets after lawn treatments](/articles/pet-safe-lawn-care-after-fertilizer-herbicide.md).

## What a homeowner can still accomplish this week

**Culture and planning first:**

- Photograph last spring’s henbit / chickweed / Poa patches and this summer’s thin zones.
- Confirm whether any zone still gets winter rye.
- Put the nitrogen stop date and the PRE target week on the same calendar.
- Keep morning irrigation honest so you are not watering winter weed seed into a soft, wet thatch every evening.

**Shopping aids only (not prescriptions):**

Retail searches for [winter weed preventer lawn](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=winter+weed+preventer+lawn&tag=lawnjournal0c-20) and [barricade prodiamine granules](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=barricade+prodiamine+granules&tag=lawnjournal0c-20) are starting points after species and timing checks. Prefer soil-temperature / night-log notes and the label over a panic bag because August arrived.

Canada’s readers with warm-season turf are uncommon—translate product registrations through provincial rules. Australia’s winter readers should not copy this Northern Hemisphere early-August countdown onto dormant couch/kikuyu calendars; use local council timing and species sheets.

## What to journal in Lawn Care Journal

- Grass species by zone and whether rye overseed is planned
- Last spring’s winter-weed map and this week’s thin-spot photos
- Chosen PRE window and why (K-State Aug–early Sep vs Clemson nights vs AgriLife/UGA themes)
- Night-low / soil-temp log dates
- Product active ingredient, rate, area treated, and measured water-in inches
- Sequential-application reminder date
- Follow-up scout notes in October–November for escapes that need postemergence while small

Use the [Lawn Care Journal](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lawn-care-journal/id1507797403) app to keep the countdown honest before germination. Optional in-app Assistant is educational only—not a herbicide prescription for your county.
