If you grow **bermudagrass** in the transition zone—or anywhere winters bite hard—late July and August are when you still control next April’s story. **Spring dead spot** (*Ophiosphaerella* species) infects roots, rhizomes, and stolons in **cool moist fall**, then the damaged turf dies from **winter injury**. Dead circles show up when healthy bermuda greens up. This page is a **timing and culture checklist** for typical DIY lawns—not a site diagnosis or a label substitute. ## What spring dead spot looks like (and what it is not)

## Late-summer checklist (before soil cools)

### 1. Confirm you have a bermuda spring-dead-spot history

Photograph last spring’s dead circles—especially shade edges, north slopes, compacted gates, and low bowls. If the same spots returned for years, you have a **map** worth planning around. First-year weird brown after a mild winter may need digging and extension eyes before chemistry.

### 2. Set a nitrogen stop date

NC State cultural framing: do **not** apply nitrogen within about **6 weeks of winter dormancy**, and do not exceed about **1 lb N per 1,000 sq ft per application** during the season. Older advice pushed acidifying N (ammonium sulfate) for SDS. NC State research is more specific: **calcium nitrate** as the sole N source helped suppress **eastern** *O. korrae* in their work, while **ammonium sulfate** helped against **Midwest** *O. herpotricha*. Fall **potassium** applications that are often marketed for SDS **did not reduce disease** in that NC State research—keep K at soil-test sufficiency for general turf health (Clemson still emphasizes adequate K for cold tolerance), but do not expect muriate of potash alone to erase spring dead spot. Aerate and manage thatch while bermuda is **growing hard**. NC State recommends **hollow-tine aerification at least three times per year in summer** on severely affected sites. DNA (dinitroaniline) crabgrass preemergents can **slow stolon rooting** into dead circles. On sites with SDS history, extension programs often advise **skipping** those materials in recovering patches so bermuda can crawl back in (NC State, Clemson).
