By late July, sunny **St. Augustine** edges that stay yellow after you water often tempt a “bug bag” weekend. Sometimes that guess is right—**southern chinch bug** (*Blissus insularis*) is the Southeast’s classic midsummer St. Augustine pest—but UF/IFAS estimates about **one-third** of St. Augustine lawns already harbor low numbers that do **not** need an insecticide. The DIY job this week is **count at the margin**, then decide.

Drought-stressed, sunny, open turf with thick **thatch** is hit first and hardest. UF/IFAS notes drought periods often track elevated damage (sometimes via weaker plant defenses more than “happier” bugs). That is why late-July heat waves and watering restrictions create false confidence: the lawn looks dry, you add minutes, and the yellow patches still expand outward from dying centers into green margins—the classic chinch pattern.

## Late-July decision tree

1. **Probe first**—if the top inches are bone-dry, correct [watering](/articles/summer-lawn-watering-deep-infrequent) and wait for a recovery read before chemistry. Use a [soil moisture meter](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=soil+moisture+meter+lawn&tag=lawnjournal0c-20) or probe so drought and insects are not one guess.
2. **Part the canopy at the margin**—bugs concentrate in green-to-yellow transition thatch, not always in dead centers (UF/IFAS; NC State). Mid-afternoon on warm sunny days is a common activity window.
3. **Float-count**—push a bottomless can or cylinder **2–3 in** into moist turf at the edge, fill with water, keep water above the grass, and count floating nymphs and adults for about **5–10 minutes**. Repeat in **3–4** spots.
4. **Compare to ~20–25/ft²**—UF/IFAS and Clemson use that abundance theme as a treat conversation. Scale for your can area (a ~6-inch can is not a full square foot—do the math or sample multiple cans).
