By late July, arid-zone, coastal, and reclaimed-water lawns often show **tip scorch, margin burn, or wilt that does not match a fertilizer stripe**—and the cart item becomes a fungicide or another soluble bag. That skips the water-quality question. UF/IFAS irrigation-water analysis guidance and NC State Extension’s turf irrigation water-quality bulletin both start with **what is dissolved in the water you apply**: total salts (salinity), sodium relative to calcium and magnesium (sodicity / SAR), and specific ions such as chloride—not only how many minutes the controller ran.

Heat and drought **amplify** salinity stress (UF/IFAS EP616)—the same ECw that looked fine in spring can tip burn in sticky July when ET is high and rainfall is scarce.

## How to read a water report (homeowner version)

Ask the lab—or your reclaimed-water provider—for at least:

1. **ECw** (electrical conductivity) in **dS/m** (same as mmhos/cm for practical reading).  
2. **SAR** (sodium adsorption ratio)—sodium relative to calcium and magnesium.  
3. **Chloride** and, when listed, **boron** and **bicarbonate**.  
4. **pH** (UF/IFAS desired band often about **6.5–8.4** for irrigation water guidelines).

UF/IFAS EP616 desired-range themes for turf/landscape irrigation water include roughly **ECw &lt; 0.75 dS/m**, **TDS &lt; about 480 ppm**, **SAR &lt; about 6**, and **chloride &lt; about 70 ppm**—targets, not a promise every municipal or reclaimed source meets them. NC State’s coarser irrigation-use table is useful when you only have ECw: below **0.25** low hazard; **0.25–0.75** usable with moderate leaching; **0.75–2.25** caution on poor drainage and sensitive plants; above **2.25** generally unsuitable.

## Reclaimed water, wells, and softener bypass

**Reclaimed / recycled water.** UF/IFAS landscape reclaimed-water series: domestic wastewater treatment leaves **higher dissolved salts** than potable water; plants can show physiological drought, tip burn, and specific-ion injury. Best DIY habits—right plant / right place (salt-tolerant turf and ornamentals), monitor for wilt-with-moisture and edge browning, ask the provider for constituent reports, and flush / leach when a fresher source or rainfall is available. Nutrients in reclaimed water also mean you should not blindly stack a full fertilizer program on top—count what the water already delivers when you [soil-test](/articles/spring-soil-test-before-lawn-fertilizer).

**Wells and ponds.** Coastal and arid wells can run high ECw or SAR even when the water tastes “fine.” Test before you blame the grass variety.

**Water softeners.** Arizona Turf Tips: softeners exchange sodium for hardness minerals. That is useful indoors and harmful outdoors over time—dispersed, flaky soil, poor infiltration, more runoff. Plumb irrigation to **bypass** the softener. If softened water already ran for years and a soil test shows elevated sodium, gypsum plus leaching is the chemistry conversation—not another softener “salt” bag on the lawn.

## Leaching, gypsum, and what gypsum cannot do

**Leaching** is the only reliable way to **lower total soil salinity**: apply **extra** irrigation (or wait for heavy rain) so water moves **below** the root zone, carrying soluble salts with it. Measure with a [rain gauge](https://www.amazon.com/s?k=lawn+rain+gauge&tag=lawnjournal0c-20). Cycle-and-soak on slopes so water infiltrates instead of running to the gutter. Follow [local watering restrictions](/articles/cool-season-overseed-watering-restrictions-variance-hand-water)—some utilities allow occasional deep soaks; Stage 2/3 rules may block leaching until restrictions ease. **Gypsum (calcium sulfate)** helps when **sodium** has dispersed the soil (high SAR / ESP)—calcium displaces sodium on exchange sites so sodium can leach as a sulfate salt (NC State when water SAR exceeds about **10**; Arizona when ESP / sodium tests support it). **Gypsum does not “eat salts.”** On a saline soil with low sodium hazard, adding gypsum without leaching does not fix ECw. Do not confuse this page with a blanket gypsum-for-every-brown-lawn myth.

## DIY decision tree (tip burn week)

1. **Source first**—municipal, well, pond, or reclaimed? Softener on the irrigation line?  
2. **Pattern map**—whole zone vs spreader stripes vs bead-positive circles vs wand bands ([herbicide phytotoxicity](/articles/herbicide-phytotoxicity-spray-drift-vs-disease-midsummer-lawn)).  
3. **Hand-lens blades**—lesions / mycelium → disease guides; pure tip/margin scorch without lesions stays abiotic.  
4. **Probe moisture**—wilt with moist soil supports physiological drought from salts; powder-dry bead-positive pockets support [LDS](/articles/localized-dry-spot-hydrophobic-thatch-wetting-agent-midsummer).  
5. **Test**—irrigation water ECw/SAR and soil soluble salts; do not guess from leaf color alone.

7. **Leach** when drainage and rules allow; add **gypsum only** if SAR/sodium results support it; aerate sealed sodic surfaces first.  
8. **Match plants**—centipede/bahia on high-ECw reclaimed water is an uphill fight; St. Augustine or paspalum themes tolerate more salt when they fit the site.

## What not to do

- Buy a **fungicide** because tips browned after a month of reclaimed overhead spray.  
- Dump **gypsum** on every brown lawn without a sodium / SAR story.  
- Keep irrigating from the **softener** line “because the water feels nicer.”  
- Answer tip burn with a **quick-release fertilizer** dump—more soluble salts on a salty profile ([fertilizer salt burn](/articles/fertilizer-salt-burn-vs-disease-midsummer-lawn)).  
- Nightly **one-minute mist**—you evaporate water and leave salts in the top inch.  
- Ignore **drainage**—you cannot leach a bathtub soil; fix grade / compaction first ([core aeration](/articles/liquid-aeration-vs-core-aeration-compaction)).

Log water source (and softener bypass yes/no), utility or lab ECw / SAR / chloride, soil EC and sodium notes, leach dates and measured inches, gypsum product and rate if used, tip-burn photos by zone, rainfall, and which grass species sits on which meter.
