## When a hose-end is the wrong tool this week

Skip the dial bottle for midsummer herbicides when **any** of these are true:

1. The label is written in **fl oz (or oz) per 1,000 sq ft** (or per acre) and you cannot prove delivery with a catch test.  
2. Afternoon highs will sit near or above about **85 °F** with dry soils—Nebraska / Wisconsin / Purdue midsummer cautions already say many broadleaf apps should wait.  
3. You are treating **nutsedge** in a last-call window and need repeatable rates for a **second flush** ([last-call guide](/articles/yellow-nutsedge-late-july-last-call-tuber-window)).  
4. Sensitive **tomatoes, grapes, or beds** sit downwind—UMN / Ohio State drift themes punish fine mist and high boom/wand height.  
5. You already burned a strip last weekend and want a “stronger” dial setting—that is how phytotoxicity becomes a fungicide panic.

Hose-end convenience still fits some manufacturer-matched soluble feeds. For pesticides, Virginia Tech’s framing is blunt: treat it as a **small-area convenience tool**, not a precision applicator.

## Calibrate once, then decide spray-now vs wait

Use **water only**—no product in the tank—on a surface similar to the lawn.

1. **Mark ~1,000 sq ft** (**20×50 ft** classic).  
2. **Fill about halfway**; spray at your normal pace, wand height, and pump rhythm. Time **2–3** passes; average the seconds.  
3. Catch spray into a measuring pitcher for that **same average time**.  
4. **Fluid ounces collected ≈ ounces of spray mixture per 1,000 sq ft.**  
5. Scale to your polygon: mixture needed = catch × (sq ft ÷ 1,000); product needed = label oz/1,000 × (sq ft ÷ 1,000).

### Worked example (PES arithmetic for a sedge strip)

Treated edges: **1,200 sq ft**.  
Label: **0.9 oz product per 1,000 sq ft** in enough water to cover.  
Calibration catch: **64 oz** of water for the 1,000 sq ft timing.

- Mixture needed: 64 × 1.2 ≈ **77 oz**.  
- Product needed: 0.9 × 1.2 = **1.08 oz**.  
- Water: about **76 oz**.

If the catch is far from the label’s preferred carrier volume, **slow down or speed up** (Ohio State) before you raise pressure. Re-check until you are inside about **±5%**. Journal the seconds and ounces—next year’s early-summer flush should not start from a blank driveway.

Optional acres method when the jug is written per acre: USU **18.5×18.5 ft** (~1/128 acre) plot—ounces caught ≈ **gallons per acre**. Convert back to per-1,000 when needed (1 acre ≈ **43.56 × 1,000 sq ft**).

## Heat, carrier volume, and streaking (why “full dial” burns)

## Late-July decision tree (herbicide weekend)

3. **Probe moisture**—do not spray wilted cool-season turf “for weeds” (Purdue burn stack).  
4. **Calibrate with water** on a 1,000 sq ft strip; journal ounces and walk time.  
5. **Mix only today’s measured area**—no leftover tank sitting in sun.  
6. **Spray when wind is light but not zero**; keep pressure modest; sweep hardscapes.  
7. **Hold mowing** when the label asks (Penn State nutsedge themes often ~2–3 days before/after).  
8. **Journal the active ingredient** for rotation and next year’s early flush—not the bag art.
