By late July and into September, patches of lawn can turn brown overnight with a **sharp line** between chewed turf and green turf. That pattern often belongs to **fall armyworm** caterpillars (*Spodoptera frugiperda*)—a migratory moth pest that overwinters in frost-free Florida and southern Texas, then rides weather fronts north each year (NC State, UGA, Clemson). Outbreaks are **sporadic**: some summers barely register; others strip bermudagrass, fescue, ryegrass, and bluegrass in a few days.

## After the army marches through

Caterpillars usually eat **blades**, not the underground network that stores next year’s green-up.
