Late August is when the spray jug and the seed bag try to share the same weekend. Kansas State’s seeding-after-herbicide research is blunt about the late-summer trap: **halosulfuron-methyl** (SedgeHammer and similar nutsedge products) applied in late summer or early fall can **stunt tall-fescue roots** and cut cover when you seed inside about **two weeks**, and the product label still asks for about a **four-week** delay before seeding. A three-way broadleaf or quinclorac spray from last month may be a different story—but **your label is the law**, not a blog table.

## The late-August herbicide → seed gate (10 steps)

1. **Inventory every jug used since June.** Write product name, **active ingredients**, rate, and spray date for each polygon. Phone photos of labels beat “I think it was the yellow jug.”
2. **Separate weed stories.** Crabgrass tillers → [quinclorac spray-or-wait](/articles/crabgrass-quinclorac-mid-august-spray-or-live-with-it-triage.md). Yellow nutsedge → [nutsedge ID](/articles/yellow-nutsedge-lawn-identification-control.md). Plantain / violet / Charlie → [September broadleaf shopping](/articles/cool-season-september-broadleaf-shopping-late-july.md). Residual spring PRE → [aerate/overseed vs PRE sequencing](/articles/fall-aerate-overseed-vs-preemergence-broadleaf-sequencing.md).
3. **Read the plant-back / seeding section on each label.** K-State’s bottom line: **labels must be followed**; research that looked safer than a label does not rewrite the jug. When label and research disagree, the **stricter** path (usually the label) is the DIY default.
4. **Flag the late-summer nutsedge trap.** K-State: late-summer / early-fall **halosulfuron-methyl** can leave mild chlorosis on emerging cool-season seedlings and **significantly stunt tall-fescue root development** when seeding lands inside about two weeks; SedgeHammer-type labels call for about a **four-week** delay. If you sprayed nutsedge in the last 2–3 weeks, that is almost always **Path B**, not Path A.
5. **Treat three-way broadleaf and quinclorac as label-first, research-second.** McFadden et al.: 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba and quinclorac often allowed successful KBG / tall-fescue cover when seeded **0–14 days** after application under study conditions; SpeedZone-, GameOn-, and 4-Speed XT–type mixes were also described as relatively safe on tall fescue in that 0–14 day window in K-State’s summary. That is **not** a green light to ignore a retail label that still lists ~3–4 weeks (Illinois / Missouri home-lawn themes often land near **~30 days** or **3–4 weeks** for selective broadleaf before seeding—confirm locally).
6. **Never seed into a conventional preemergence barrier on purpose.** K-State: **dithiopyr** (Dimension) **greatly inhibited** tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass seedlings. Purdue’s older label table examples: prodiamine-type products often wait **60 days or after the second mowing** (whichever is longer); dithiopyr-type products often want a uniform stand with at least **two mowings**. If spring PRE is still the story, Path B / renovate honesty beats wasted seed.
7. **Pick Path A / B / C by polygon and write it down.** Path A yards book contact tools for the regional seed window ([fall overseeding timing](/articles/fall-overseeding-cool-season-lawn-timing.md)). Path B yards finish [dormant green-up](/articles/cool-season-still-dormant-green-up-gate-late-august-execute-triage.md) and culture while the calendar clears. Path C yards seed thin, untreated strips now and schedule weed chemistry after establishment tests on the label.
