Friday night looks mild on many Plains and Upper Midwest lawns—then an Extreme Heat Watch weekend turns every straw polygon into a watering panic. Sometimes **bluegrass billbug** larvae (*Sphenophorus parvulus*) have already **hollowed stems and chewed crowns**, so another light sprinkle cannot resurrect the stand. Penn State, Ohio State, Rutgers, and UMass Extension all describe the same homeowner trap: billbug injury **mimics drought**, peaks heavily **late June through early August**, and needs a **tug test** plus **sawdust-like frass**—not a heat-dome fungicide or weevil jug copied from a golf podcast.

Ohio: early injury looks like **irregular mottling or thinning**, as if the lawn were slipping into heat dormancy or a vague disease—exactly what a weekend Extreme Heat Watch looks like from the curb. Rutgers: damage normally runs **late June and July** and **continues into August** under temperature and moisture stress. UMass: browning often starts near **pavement edges**—the same hot margins that look “under-watered” first.

Important contrast with true dormancy: billbug-killed crowns **do not reliably green up** when rain returns. Irrigation and modest fertility can **mask light infestations** while tillers establish (Ohio’s cultural note), but they will not resurrect hollowed, frass-packed stems. ## The Friday-night triage (10 minutes)
